You’re setting up your garage sale mostly to get rid of stuff you don’t use anymore, but you also want to make a pretty penny—who doesn’t? Among the things that you just want to get rid of, what are some of the things that sell particularly well, that you can expect a little more money for? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Furniture
Furniture is great for two big reasons. For one, they are great projects that creative shoppers will be happy to take home. You might think twice about taking a paintbrush to a brand-new desk, but one you picked up from your neighbor’s yard sale is the perfect victim for a colorful addition to your home office.
The other thing is that furniture catches your eye. Especially if it’s in good condition, or has some sort of antique appeal, shoppers might be lured in to get a closer look and end up browsing through the rest of the items. Furniture is a double-whammy to have on your side for sure!
Coats and sweaters
Clothes can be hit or miss. A unique shirt might catch somebody’s eye, and someone might fall in love with a particular dress, but these lighter fabrics that are worn in aren’t necessarily going to fly off of the racks. Heavier garments, like coats and big sweaters, are another story.
Especially if you don’t live in a chronically cold region, these heavier items not only hold up better to wear and tear, they probably haven’t been worn all that much anyway. Not only this, but heavy coats and sweaters can be tougher to come by, and often come with a hefty price tag. This makes a reasonably priced and stylish coat or sweater at a garage sale almost irresistible!
Kitchenware
We’re not exactly sure what it is about dishes and appliances, but there’s some sort of magic about them. For some, the allure of a vintage appliance that still works well is more than enough. An old tea kettle, or an old French press, for example, are bound to be hits. For others, these older items serve as fantastic decoration pieces. Surely you’ve stumbled into a quaint little coffee shop with at least one vintage Italian press on display just for the looks.
From wooden spoons to vintage plates and functioning appliances, it’s hard to go wrong with kitchenware.
Games
It’d be tough to crown a champion of the garage sale, but old games are certainly a contender. Especially if they’re priced low, a visitor who picks up one game is going to pick up a handful. Not only that, though, games are one of the only items that are practically guaranteed to be worth quite a bit, if not more than what you originally paid! A lot of old games are no longer made, so if you have a discontinued game that’s still in good condition, you might be surprised what people are willing to pay for it.
Keeping games in good condition isn’t the easiest of feats, however, so do be cautious with your pricing! If you can’t guarantee that it still runs like a gem, don’t expect a premium selling price, especially if you don’t want complaints to show up on your doorstep later on.
Odd items
Serendipity is the name of the game, especially for people who are just going around the neighborhood to see what they find. While some shoppers are going to stumble upon the perfect lamp or book by chance, others are going to be excited about other, less predictable items.
A lot of times, it’s the items we least expect that find the most excited new owners. Some old fishing rods, some old documents like magazines, old soda bottles, ugly artwork, jewelry, etc. Adding some variety and including items that you don’t expect to gather a lot of attention can actually end up working quite a bit in your favor. The adventure and discovery, after all, is one of our favorite parts of the whole event. Long live the yard sale!
