Things To Do In Peoria: Uncover Unique Finds in the Heart of Illinois

Despite Californians’ best attempts to convince us otherwise, cities and towns across the Midwest are full of fun, quirky, and sometimes magical events and experiences for all ages and interests! Peoria is a great example with fun things to do and a spunky history to go along with. The Whiskey Capital of the World? What more can you ask for!

Well, realistically, maybe a few things. Maybe some cultural offerings, some opportunities to connect with nature, and of course some sweet, sweet second-hand deals. Luckily, the wonderful city of Peoria delivers here as well. Let’s take a look at some unique finds to uncover in the heart of Illinois!

Enjoy the River

Peoria is located right on the Illinois River, which means that enjoying the river is a great way to take in the spirit of the city. Apart from taking in the beautiful view, there is more than plenty to do alongside the Riverfront. Markets, entertainment, and comfy cafes line the river, inviting guests and locals alike to enjoy one of the defining geographic features of the region alongside some shopping, some music, or just a delicious cup of coffee.

The riverfront is also an important part of Peoria culture and history for many more reasons. Up until a few years ago, the Spirit of Peoria was a 160-foot paddle wheeler boat that took guests up and down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. With several themed trips and the help of twin Caterpillar diesel engines, poetic for the birthplace of Caterpillar, The Spirit of Peoria was a staple of the city and brought both guests and locals plenty of joy and wonder.

The boat was suddenly and unexpectedly sold off in 2022, and locals waved their final goodbyes and the Spirit made its way down the river for the last time. Although this departure left a gap in the heart of the city, the “spirit” of the boat remains among the lively and welcoming culture alongside the riverfront. Fortunately, there are more ways to enjoy this remarkable river!

Get a Bit of Culture

Alongside the river and otherwise throughout the city, there are plenty of opportunities to get you a bit of culture in the City of Peoria! The Smithsonian-affiliated Peoria Riverfront Museum offers guests tales and exhibits of historical travel, as well as local art, science, and technology. Peoria is also the birthplace of Caterpillar, and the Caterpillar Visitors Center will tell you all about it. If heavy equipment and engines are your cup of tea, this is your opportunity to learn some of the history behind the company, as well as to design a CAT for yourself, and climb in a tractor simulator.

Beyond the museums, there are plenty of cultural events scattered throughout the city and throughout the year to explore. The Peoria Bach Festival, the International Music, Wine, and Craft Beer Festival, and Sommerfest are just a few examples!

Touch Some Grass

The river is far from the only way to connect with nature in Peoria. In fact, for nature lovers, there are plenty of ways to take in the beautiful colors of the seasons throughout the city. The Luthy Botanical Garden is 4.5 acres large and filled with hundreds of genera, with a special focus on roses, herbs, and plenty of other pretty plants.

Just outside of Peoria, you’ll also find the Wildlife Prairie Park, an entire park dedicated to the native species of Illinois. From bears to bobcats and eagles, you’ll have a great time spotting the protected wildlife! Staying within the city limits, you can also visit the Peoria Zoo, home to over 200 animals and more than 100 species!

Hunt for Some Deals

Finally, what’s a city without great second-hand deals? Packaged snuggly inside and throughout the city is Peoria’s lively second-hand market. Bargain hunters have plenty of options if they’re looking for clothes, furniture, and everything in between! The following are some great options for shops.
