This prominent Boston-based art and dance journalist, with boundless energy and vivid descriptions, delivered thousands of reviews - supporting the rise of the some of the region's great artists. For 50 years Christine was on, in and around the Boston art scene. A prolific writer with a wide range of interests, she began contributing to the Boston Globe as dance critic in 1978. She added the role of art critic in 1990, for perspective, that was the same year of the Gardner Heist. Her work came home with her, and her home became a living museum - where the line between art and anything else, from the furniture to the teacups, was blurred. Highlighting the Boston artists: Greats like Richard Yarde (American, 1939-2012) a Boston raised, African-American artist who is best known for his watercolors depicting portraits, street scenes and modernist compositions. He taught art in many colleges and universities in the Boston area as well as western Massachusetts. A collection of Dale Broholm (American, b.1956) he calls his work "contemporary with historical design influences”. We call it drop dead gorgeous! Broholm has pieces in the permanent collection of the MFA Boston, the Smithsonian Institute and here at this Newton home, where his work is a feature, NO a staple, in every room. Mark Del Guidice creates unique furniture and wood sculpture, residing in Stow, MA, his pair of avantgarde Hieroglyphic Lamps highlight that his choice woods present the perfect background to juxtapose his unique charters. Rick Wrigley (b. 1955) his handcrafted round table features exotic woods, with a spoke style surface created with an ebony inlay that separates panels of satinwood. His work is part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum Wrigley currently works and lives in Provincetown, MA. A collection of Leslie Wilcox (1949), sculptures Leslie Wilcox is a Massachusetts based artist known for her sculptures using metal screening who exhibits regularly at Boston Sculptors Gallery. She graduated from the School at the Museum of Fine Arts and her work can be found in the collections of the DeCordova Museum, Fuller Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts as well as Brandeis and Harvard Universities. A collection of Marc Steele. Mark Steele is a well-known Boston painter, sculptor, designer, and illustrator. From the artist "My goal as an artist is not to duplicate what nature does best, but it is to ignite the sensations of the stunning world we live in by making artwork that rearranges three-dimensional space through the use of visual surprises of scale, viewpoint and dimension. All of this I do in hopes of adding to a bigger discussion about the importance of who we are and why we are here." Jo Sandman's Light Memory Portfolio of 8 sepia-toned, gelatin silver prints that combine x ray with antique cameras, these are striking! A collection of Laura Baring-Gould (American, 1965) The pears for this body of work were originally harvested from pear trees at The Paul Revere House, Dorchester Historical Society. Their forms were cast into bronze - - Laura chose to freeze frame pears in varied stages of ripeness, rather rotting, that these go from looking eatable to looking rotten, and we LOVE them! A collection of Mark Milloff (American, born 1953) he teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design Additional Bostonian artists include: Warren Mather, and his innovative transfer techniques for ceramics. From Boston’s Clay Dragon Studios David Judelson (20th century) and Shellie Zimmerman Brooks (20th century). Linda Heuy, and her environmentally forward-thinking bouquets Nan Freeman (American, 20th century), James Wilson Rayen (American, 1935-2013) Christine's collection highlights the importance of art. With titles like “Death of Nature” you recall the intention is not to be pleasing, while it can be, it should also make you smirk, laugh, cry, think, play and love. In that order, lol. Let's laugh! Kate Blacklock (American, born 1957), created this a misshapen vase, with five feet, after her residency at the Sevres porcelain factory. Let's smirk! Watercolor, El Arte Sin Su Histeria, by Carlos Estevez (Cuban/American, 1969), 2002 A powerful piece by Cuban artist Carlos Estevez. Estévez is considered one of the most prominent Cuban artists of the late 20th century. The title translates to "Art Without Its History". Estevez presents a marionette figure, one of his recurring themes, raising the right leg in an elegant dance-like pose while its head lies on the floor suggesting that "Art Without Its History" amounts to a dysfunctional puppet. Let's cry! Mark Kohn (20th century) Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam, monument for the deported Dutch Jews (1942-43) by Mark Kohn (Dutch, 20th century). Let's think! Geoff Dyer (Australian, 1947-2020), 2003, Tasmania’s most important and celebrated contemporary artists was a true innovator – he lived and breathed paint, constantly driven to make his mark and share his love of the landscape, in all its many forms and ambience. Let's play! The Game of Buzkashi, by James Nachtwey, Afghanistan, 1996 Gelatin Silver Print. From the artist "I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated". James has published multiple books, Deeds of War and Inferno. Let love TRIUMP! A collection of Kim Berman (South African, 1960),Prints, one that depicts smoldering fields of sunflowers, she is trying to tell us a story of defiance and reliance. And, let love be beautiful! Collection of Porcelain Vases by Mary Rich, British, 1940-2022 one of Britain’s finest ceramicists. She is a Fellow of The Craft Potters Association and a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen. This home is PACKED! Christine's collection highlights the importance of art. With titles like “Death of Nature” you recall the intention is not to be pleasing, while it can be, it should also make you smirk, laugh, cry, think and love. In that order, lol. Curtain call for a few important gems; YES it is time to start clapping! Limited Edition, 30 Works by Boston Sculptors Gallery, 2007, with display cabinet Paper Scissors Sculpture portfolio, a boxed portfolio also from Boston Sculptors Gallery, 2004, containing 28 paper sculptures, digital prints on coated paper, and instruction sheets for assembling each piece. WAAYY more diverse than a paper-doll book. Set of Four Prints, A Cloudy Day (with the Citgo Sign), by Robert Kirshner (American, 1955-2009) Kirshner used drawing as a means of communication in part due to a language deficit. Drawing was a way for him to record and share his awareness of the urban landscape, the expansion of the public transportation system and the ever changing fate of the Boston Red Sox and Celtics. His work was reviewed by Christine Temin in the Boston Globe. A collection of Ken Hruby (American, 20th century). Ken Hruby is a contemporary artist whose work is informed by his time in the army and tours in Vietnam. He lives and works in Gloucester. Christine Temin wrote, Boston Globe, November 2, 1997. “His art grows out of his experiences as an infantry officer in Korea and Vietnam — and out of pondering the relationship between soldier and society. Most Vietnam art is angry venting: Hruby’s is full of ambiguity, irony, even wit, and that opens it up to all of us who didn't go to war… Hruby makes poetry, not propaganda. His new poem is an epic. But like most of his work, it is marked by an elegant economy…” We can't help to assume that his response to her review was this piece: a wood plaque with pencil in ear, inscribed to Christine from Ken, "For Christine, who listens and looks as well as she writes. With gratitude, Ken Hruby. Join THE HUNT ONLINE! This VIRTUAL EVENT IS LIVE CLICK HERE TO SHOP! THEN we we'll OPEN to the PUBLIC on Saturday 3/15 for a good old fashioned estate sale.
